In the LASIK procedure, a flap is made, using a microkeratome blade, and gently laid back before the laser is used. Then, once the laser treatment has been given, the flap is replaced so that the epithelium is left intact and the eye is protected.
Because very little of the epithelium is disturbed, patients report a high comfort level after the procedure. In most cases, patients can go back to their daily routines the day after the procedure. With LASIK, visual acuity is restored within a few days rather than weeks.
For these reasons, LASIK is now the preferred refractive procedure for many patients.
Now, if you’re near age 40 or older, you’ll want to consider monovision.
